West Bengal
West Bengal has one of the richest traditions and cultures that are deep rooted in Indian history. It’s capital city Calcutta (now Kolkata) was British India’s capital established in the year 1688 as part of the expansion plans of the British. Calcutta is best known for its elaborate celebrations of festivals like the festival of mother Durga, the goddess of power (Shakti) called Durga Puja. This festival is one of the most important festivals for Bengalis all over in India and is celebrated with brilliantly intricate idols of Goddess Durga, vibrant colors and ample of good food. Held during between the months September and October, visiting the Kolkata city at the time would be an interesting experience.
Calcutta’s fairs like the Poush mela, Sonar Sanras are also quite popular and attract hoards of visitors. If you’re planning to visit Calcutta, make sure that you visit the Howrah Bridge, Nicco park and Eden gardens (stadium) amongst the other splendid sights in and around the city.
