Himachal Pradesh

Haridwar

Sitting on the west banks of the river Ganges, Haridwar is considered to be the Gateway to Lord Vishnu and is also one of the seven holy sites in India according to Hindu mythology. Famous for its temples, tanks and bathing ghats, Haridwar is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The city plays host to millions of religious pilgrims during the Kumbh Melas.

If you’re planning to make a trip to Haridwar, make sure you make your travel itinerary to accommodate some of Hardiwar’s splendid sights. The sacred ghat of Har-Ki-Pauri, the temple of Chandi Devi and the temple of Vaishno Devi offer unique architectural sights. If you’re ready to venture into the outskirts of Hardiwar make it a point to visit Rishikesh that is about 28 kilometers off Haridwar. Daman and Diu

Ruled by the Portuguese for more than 450 years the union territories of Daman and Diu have beautiful beaches, old Portuguese forts and churches that reflect the Portuguese influence. Both places have worth-visiting spots. Surrounded by the Valsad district of Gujarat, Daman is known for the massive fort at Moti Daman, grand Light house, gardens, historic monuments and ancient Gothic style churches.

Diu is an isolated island on the Arabian Sea coast comprising of salt pans, limestone cliffs and sandy beaches. The numerous quarries sprinkled all over the island including the coconut and palm trees serve as major tourist attractions in the city. The Nagoa beach and the museum are also worth a visit.

Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh came into being as India’s 26th state in the year 2000, with about a third of their population being Tribal. Largely forest covered, Chattisgarh plays host to more than 10 important rivers, wildlife, waterfalls and crops that thrive.

The epicenter of the tribal populated Bastar district, the Kanger Valley National Park, houses a number of ancient caves. The tribal village areas of Chattisgarh are indeed a reason to visit the state. These villages are vibrant with the culture and traditions of the tribals that have inhabited the forests and surrounding areas for over 10,000 years. Among the tribal festivals make sure you catch the ‘Bastar Dassera’ if you visit Chhattisgarh between September and October. It is one of Chattisgarh’s most important festivals which is celebrated for 10 days.

Calcutta

Calcutta (now Kolkata) was British India’s capital established in the year 1688 as part of the expansion plans of the British. Calcutta is best known for its elaborate celebrations of festivals like the festival of mother Durga, the goddess of power (Shakti) called Durga Puja. This festival is one of the most important festivals for Bengalis all over in India and is celebrated with brilliantly intricate idols of Goddess Durga, vibrant colors and ample of good food. Held during between the months September and October, visiting the Kolkata city at the time would be an interesting experience.

Calcutta’s fairs like the Poush mela, Sonar Sanras are also quite popular and attract hoards of visitors. If you’re planning to visit Calcutta, make sure that you visit the Howrah Bridge, Nicco park and Eden gardens (stadium) amongst the other splendid sights in and around the city.
